Learning Resource Centre

Introduction

The College learning Resource Centre (LRC) is staffed full time by Mrs Dianah Bennett. All staff and students are automatically members of the College LRC.

We have the thumb print recognition system which has replaced the need for a library card. The LRC is open from 8.30 – 3.50 each day and students may use its facilities for homework, research and borrowing during break, lunch time, and for half an hour after school. The LRC provides a comfortable, friendly and inspiring environment for the students, one in which the students feel able to approach staff with any queries or requests.

Students may only use the LRC during lessons with a member of staff’s written permission (a note from staff stating the reason for coming into the LRC e.g. research, photocopying etc). A network of computers is available for students’ use in the LRC. There is also a scanner and a photocopier (colour and black and white). The computers can be used during lessons time if they are booked in advance.

Years 7, 8 and 9 have regular English (reading) lessons in the LRC. Other subject teachers bring their classes to the LRC for reading, research and enhanced resources. These lessons are booked in advance and if books are needed for a specific lesson I can prepare a selection of books to order. During these lessons the LRC continues to function and there are many students sent from other classes to research, photocopy etc.

The Nursery visits the LRC once a fortnight. During this visit I read to the children, sing songs and generally have a lot of fun. The children love this visit and of course it all helps to encourage reading and looking at books!

Staff/LRC Manager Co – operation

Part of my role as LRC Manager is to assist teaching and support staff as much as possible within the LRC.

I welcome suggestions for book purchases and every effort will be made to acquire suggested books for the LRC. I welcome books reviews from students and staff; it is inspiring and encouraging to discuss a book and I find that students enjoy this process.

The College subscribes to the Schools Library Service (SLS) and topic loans for your classes are available from this service via the LRC. The SLS has a very large stock of books and will make up boxes of books on a particular subject on request. This is a fabulous service, friendly and reliable and the selection of books seems endless! I am happy to assist with research projects and homework.

The Staff Development Library in located in the LRC.

At a time of changing resources, the LRC provides a friendly yet stimulating environment that encourages the pleasure of books and the expansion of your imagination which will in turn encourage a life skill...that of reading a book !
