The Rye Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ

The Rye Wurlitzer Organ

Rye College is home to an historic 1925 Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ, the second oldest in the country.  For the last couple of years we have been thrilled to be able to offer students free theatre organ lessons in our Rye Wurlitzer Academy, which is funded entirely by donations and grants from those interested to support this beautiful instrument and keen to encourage our young star players of the future.

We are very proud of this project, as there is only one other similar scheme in the whole world, in America, on the outskirts of New York, and thrilled to see the tremendous progress made by our students, under the guidance of our Principal Wurlitzer Instructor, acclaimed international theatre organist Michael Wooldridge.

Besides lessons in College, we have special fund raising events and have taken the students to see Europe’s largest Wurlitzer organ, which is at the East Sussex National Golf Resort at Uckfield.  This summer a group of 7 Wurlitzer students are going on a trip of a lifetime, to attend the American Theatre Organ Society Convention in Orange County, Los Angeles, all kindly paid for by a well wishing sponsor.
