Frequently asked questions - Work experience 2010
When is it?
One week – either 28 June to 2 July or 5-9 July.
Who can ask about Work Experience?
Ms Charlton, who works in the LDC each Thursday and Friday
Is it compulsory?
Yes. It is your entitlement.
Can I do it on other dates – earlier in June for example?
It must be one of the above weeks.
Where can I find details of a Job Placement?
On the Internet – details about access to Veryan will be given to you by the Work Experience Co-ordinator.
What if I have found a Placement by myself and it is not on the Database?
You must give Ms Charlton the contact details who will organise a Health & Safety check.
How do I go about getting the Placement?
- Use the website to check that it is still available on the Database
- Get the telephone number from the database
- Phone the employer or make a personal visit
- Write a letter to the employer
Will I have to go to an Interview?
Most employers like to see who they might be employing so will ask you to attend an interview. Interviews are usually informal. It is preferable to wear school uniform at an interview.
Can I work with members of my family or family friends?
Work Experience replicates real life. In real life, you will work with strangers. It is therefore preferable that you learn to work with adults who are not known to you.
Can I work part-time?
You will be treated like any other employee and expected to work normal hours. Details will be on the database.
What do I do when the employer has offered me the placement?
Placement is on the Database - see Ms Charlton immediately for the Contracts.
Placement not on the Database – see Ms Charlton who will arrange for a Health & Safety check to be completed on a new placement.
What about Pay, Travel, Uniform and Meals?
Pay: A student will not receive any payment for their work. However, some employers will reward a student at the end of a successful placement. The kind of reward varies and is entirely up to the employer.
Travel: Choo se a placement that is practicable for you to get to. Travel expenses must be borne entirely by the student/family.
Uniform: Some employers state specific uniform requirements on the placement Job Description. Check this out. For example, placements at garages require students to provide their own safety boots.
Meals: Some placements, such as at a hotel, will give free meals but generally you are expected to provide your own food.
